Spectrum trading norms a forward looking move: Vodafone India

Spectrum trading norms a forward looking move: Vodafone IndiaGovernment's clearing the spectrum trading norms is a forward looking move that will allow better utilisation of radiowaves and help smaller telecom operators to raise capital, Vodafone India has said. "We see this as a very forward looking move by the government," Vodafone India MD and CEO Sunil Sood said, adding that companies can now create greater efficiency and optimise the spectrum in the ecosystem.

It gives an option to some of the smaller players to actually raise capital because they have huge debt on their books, he said. The Cabinet last week cleared spectrum trading guidelines under which telecom operators will be able to sell radiowaves to other service providers, a move that will help address the problem of spectrum shortage.

As of now only government is allowed to allocate spectrum to telecom firms through auctions. According to some industry experts, telecom operators have been waiting for spectrum trading guidelines before they proceed with their consolidation plans.

The government had last month approved spectrum sharing guidelines aimed at addressing spectrum shortage in the country and allowing operators to mutually use radiowaves to provide services. (Source: Economic Times)

Microsoft names Brad Smith president and chief legal officer

Microsoft names Brad Smith president and chief legal officerMicrosoft has given longtime executive Brad Smith the title of president, as the company continues its transition to a new generation of leadership. Smith's full title will be president and chief legal officer. He has been Microsoft's general counsel since 2002 and became an executive vice president in 2011.

CEO Satya Nadella announced the appointment in an email to employees. Nadella said he wants Smith to play a bigger role in strengthening Microsoft's relationships and representing the company publicly. Smith will help lead the company on issues like privacy, security and accessibility, he said. Smith, 56, joined Microsoft in 1993 and has held several other titles, including company secretary.

Smith is a familiar face for investors because he has been a regular presence on the company's investor conference calls for almost a decade, said industry analyst Katherine Egbert of Piper Jaffray.

"It is interesting that they would put him as president of the company because he doesn't come from the operational side,'' she said. "I think it's a promotion of someone who's been a solid executive for them for a long time.'' (Source: Times of India)

Cyber Security Breach- Growing Concern for Crucial Government Bodies

Cyber Security Breach- Growing Concern for Crucial Government BodiesWith an increasing bent towards digital technologies, the world is not only getting simpler for the intended audience but it is also opening up new channels for the notorious minds. Within the digital parameters, chances of a possible breach of security have risen quite high. Even the coded information is not safe from the reach of professional and technically expert security offenders. Recent incidences of cyber threats are doing rounds including Vawtrak Banking Trojan and the case of Chrysler’s in-car systems breach where a ‘Jeep on the highway’ was controlled and prompted the recall of 1.4 million vehicles.

There is a dire need for specific resolution barring any prohibited intrusion into the digitally stored data in varied electronic mediums. ACSG Corp., a devoted homeland security firm, has successfully wrapped up its 100th organizational client for its exclusively developed software called Malware Guard.

The IIT, Delhi incubated firm has developed this specific cyber security software solely for meeting the objectives of the important government and law enforcement bodies. Malware Guard is an innovative and high utility product and can also act as a supplement security source to be conveniently used as an add-on to the regular antivirus installed in the system. This will function like an additional layer of security, which is technologically much ahead in comparison to the normal security adopted.

The developer retains its central focus of effectively serving the homeland security across the globe with another premier indigenized solution. It is specially designed, introducing advantageous features like offline updates instead of online. This software facilitates complete prevention, detection and removal of all malicious threats such as computer viruses or unwanted data including against the very highest level of viruses like Root kits.

Our solution works best against the Root kits even at the kernel level and it involves less than 10% of the system processes unlike other commonly used antiviruses. Malware Guard also supports a Command Line Interface (CLI) portable antivirus and thus, there’s no need for installing any file on the system as such. White filtering counts as another feature meeting the objective to self allow the details submission. Thus, clearly and instantly knowing what is to be allowed or not at the time of entertaining information submissions by users. Conveniently, it is also platform specific and develops it exclusively for Mac or Windows etc. Through all such advanced hi-tech aspects, this software is bound to provide unparalleled cyber security for all confidential data, shielding it against any misuse. Telecom companies, activists and government grapple over proliferation of mobile towers

Telecom companies, activists and government grapple over proliferation of mobile towersSometime, on Monday, Justice V M Kanade of the Bombay High Court will hear three cases. A writ petition by former Mumbai Sheriff Kiran Shantaram versus the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai; a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by actress Juhi Chawla Mehta and ten others versus the Union of India and finally, another PIL by Mumbai- based NGO NAGAR vs State of Maharashtra.

All three cases have one thing in common: they challenge the proliferation of mobile towers in Mumbai. Meanwhile, in New Delhi, telecom companies have complained that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sealed about 200 telecom towers in the capital in the last two months.

In some ways, these events, across two cities, exemplify the rough fortnight that telecom companies in India have endured. Last week, the entire cabinet along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi backed the telecom department's decision to impose punitive measures on 'erring telcos' on the issue of persistent call drops.

DEALING WITH SEALING
The telecom companies contend that they aren't entirely esponsible for calls drops. They attribute limited spectrum availability, an unjustified fear in the minds of the public about the health hazards from mobile towers and overzealous regulation from local governments as causes for poor connectivity. "Municipalities and local governments have started treating us cash generating avenues for business and this is one reason why they start sealing towers between January and March quarter, right before the closing of the financial year," said BS Shantharaju, who heads the country's largest telecom tower company, IndusTowers, a joint venture between Airtel, Idea and Vodafone. Hike Messenger for Android introduces free group calls with up to 100 people

Hike Messenger for Android introduces free group calls with up to 100 peopleHike Messenger has announced the launch of free group calling on hike connecting up to 100 people in a call, reportedly an industry first. This new addition will allow users to make free group calls with the press of a single button once inside a group chat. This feature is available on Android and is expected to roll out on iOS, Windows later this year.

To use this feature, users need to tap on the Hike Call button inside an existing group chat. Once initiated, hike calls out every member in the group automatically and the call starts as soon as one person gets connected. With the introducing of Group Calling, hike messenger has also dropped the beta tag on VoIP officially rolling out the feature. The launch of this feature is part of a big marketing campaign that will reach over 200 million users across the country.

Commenting on the launch of the calling feature, Kavin Bharti Mittal, Founder and CEO, Hike messenger, said “Many of us at Hike were quite frustrated by how hard it is to make a Group Call today. Adding someone to an already existing call is extremely tedious and even starting a conference call is quite a painful process.”

He adds, “Today we’re going to change that with the introduction of Group Calls on Hike. Now with the tap of a single button, you can connect up to 100 people in one call. It’s that simple. One tap and hike does the rest. No more pins, no more dial in numbers and no more putting people on hold. Making a Group Call has never been this easy.”

Last month, Hike Messenger announced the official launch of Hike 4.0, claiming it to be ‘the biggest update in the history of the company’. In addition, the new update had been optimised for low-end phones and particularly for areas with extremely poor network conditions. (Source: udaipurkiran.com)
